First Steps

To begin commercial activities with your small, medium or micro sized enterprise (SMMEs) in Costa Rica, it is first required to obtain different governmental, municipal, and/or commercial permits, depending on the type of business activity one is aiming to approach and pursue. Nevertheless, before initiating these first administrative procedures/formalities, one should provide a business plan, which consists of a formal definition of the firm’s business model. At allaboutbusiness we rely solely on professionals who advise/consult one’s business concerns in each of these processes, so that your business endeavor in Costa Rica begins with success.

Of the main administrative procedures/formalities required, the following stand out: the municipal patent, registration at the Costa Rican Department of Social Security (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social - CCSS), registration in the National Insurance Institute (Instituto Nacional de Seguros - INS), issuance of an operative health/sanitary permit from the ministry of health, registration of the brand or commercial entity, registration as a contributor to the General - direct Tax Administration (Dirección General de Tributación Directa - DGDT), a commercial recording in the chamber of commerce and associations, arrangement and opening of bank accounts and other requisites related to the business.
